In the music business, it's all about connections. At least that's what I'm told. I don't know squat about the music business. In the studio however, it's all about connections.
This weekend I was convinced that my music card had a faulty connection in the line out jack and as a result I was getting only the left side through my speakers. So, I went and bought a new card. That sounds easy, but before I can make the decision I have to jump through terrifying hoops of existential angst over how much I should spend, where I should buy it, should I upgrade, blah, blah, blabityblah.
I decided I would just get what I had before, a SoundBlaster Audigy, a very good amateur sound card. Suites me since I consider myself to be a very good amateur musician. When I got to the store, they only had the next generation cards available. Perfectly understandable. You could buy the old card online, but in the brick and mortar establishments they are only going to stock the latest and greatest.
One feature of the Audigy card is that it has a front panel. Well, the new fangled card has the same feature and it looked like pretty much the same thing so I gambled that my old front panel would work with the new card. Of course it didn't, so I went back coughed up some more dough and got the fancier, new fangled card with the fancier new fangled front panel.
After, everything is installed, yes my friends, the right side is still missing. The long and short of it is well just short, a short, in an RCA cable, which I will generously assume was the only one I did not trade out when hunting down the problem.
I took the card back to the store and got my money back with no hassle yesterday, bringing this sad episode to an end. Now maybe I can get some work done.
